DAC J-STAKE Set (12pcs)
The New Standard for Solo Mountain Tents
Combines lightweight construction with strength that withstands all-season use
"Lightweight and wind resistance"
Challenging the reconciliation of conflicting demands in a new dimension
"Designed for wind resistance suitable for use in mountainous regions throughout all four seasons"
"A space designed for solo living with no inconvenience, while keeping it as lightweight as possible."
Arata challenged himself to balance these conflicting demands in a new dimension distinct from existing tents.
Early in development, we calculated material weights and quickly realized that adopting tent poles prioritizing lightness over strength was essential.
Adopting lighter tent poles while ensuring the strength required for mountaineering tents—this hinted at a question with no easy answer.
Drawing on my engineering experience, I racked my brains and arrived at a solution: a unique sleeve hub structure combined with a truss structure utilizing guy lines. The sleeve hub is a groundbreaking design that combines the strength advantages of both the sleeve-type and suspension-type systems—traditional tents have historically chosen one or the other. Furthermore, by integrating this with a truss structure using guy lines, we enabled the tent's strength to be enhanced according to weather conditions.
The AX-79 has a width of 210 cm, ensuring one of the longest lengths available for a single-person mountaineering tent from a Japanese brand.
The maximum interior height is 98 cm. This height accommodates individuals over 180 cm tall without discomfort. By limiting the depth to 80 cm, we achieved a lightweight design. Our concern when setting the depth at 80 cm was backpack storage. We solved this issue by incorporating a unique rear compartment. This rear compartment can accommodate backpacks over 70 liters.
Despite its impressive performance and comfort, this update achieves a minimum weight of just 930g.
We have achieved the lightest weight class (※1) for a single-person mountaineering tent.
The product includes the tent body, flysheet, poles, and a groundsheet. We also offer optional accessories to make the AX series even more durable and comfortable.
The AX-79 is a new-generation Japanese mountaineering tent designed for solo camping and enjoying mountain climbing.
※1: Equipment weight is 1120g; however, the weight of the included groundsheet (79g) is not included in the equipment weight.
※2: Pegs are not included.
This update includes the following improvements and changes.
・One side of the pole sleeve features a closed structure, making it easier to set up the tent.
・Compared to the initial model, we reduced the force required to set up the tent during the harsh winter season when nylon shrinks.
・We relocated the guy ropes to the flysheet to enable quicker access to the guy ropes.
・The flysheet and inner tent can now be secured with Velcro, making it easier to set up the tent with the inner tent and flysheet attached.
・We've changed the coating on the inner tent's 10D fabric to enhance its strength.
・We modified the shape of the tent pole receptacle bracket to reduce the weight of the part while also lowering the risk of the tent pole slipping out during setup.

■Close-up detail
• Features a spacious vestibule ideal for cooking and storing gear
○Starting with AX-79 Version 3.0, you can now choose from two types of inner tents.
In addition to the nylon type suitable for all seasons, a new mesh type ideal for summer has arrived. Recommended for UL hikers seeking breathability and even greater lightness.
※Please note that the nylon inner tent is not sold separately.
○Large door designed for easy access (with mesh option)
The L-shaped door allows for easy one-handed opening and closing, and unlike the reverse U-shape, it enables entry and exit without needing to open it fully.
On the opposite side of the entrance, there is a small window providing access to the rear room.
○ Easy access from inside the tent to the rear compartment
You can store items like hiking boots and crampons that are difficult to store inside the tent.
Using the separately sold rear compartment ground sheet prevents your belongings from touching the ground directly, allowing for more comfortable use.
○Chimney-style mesh window ventilation
Nylon does not provide a complete seal, thereby reducing the risk of suffocation during heavy snowfall in severe winter conditions.
The design draws in cool air through the mesh window below the entrance and expels warm air from above.
○ The inner tent and flysheet entrance feature a convenient double-slider design.
You can open only the top to check the conditions outside.
○ The upper section is equipped with ventilation rods to enhance airflow.
It is designed to prevent rain from entering even when open.
We redesigned it to avoid getting in the way when not in use.
○ The inner tent features two mesh pockets at the bottom.
A resin ring has been added below the inner guy line attachment point to make it easier to adjust the guy line tension.
■Technical Note
○Features the high-performance DAC Featherlite NFL 8.7 tent poles
To achieve this weight without extreme functional compromise, the AX-79 poles required the use of DAC Featherlite NFL 8.7, prioritizing lightness over strength.
However, DAC does not recommend this pole for alpine use in high winds. Therefore, a breakthrough was essential to make this pole viable for alpine tents.
The AX series incorporates the following three innovative mechanisms into the tent structure to enhance pole strength.
1. Full-Sleeve Inner Tent x Proprietary Sleeve Hub
The AX series employs a sleeve system for connecting the inner tent to the poles. Compared to the hook-and-loop (hanging) system commonly seen in recent tents, the sleeve design distributes the load on the poles and suppresses pole deformation.
On the other hand, existing sleeve-style tents do not have the two sleeves connected, and their structure does not allow the two poles to effectively support each other.
In that regard, the hook-type design features a swivel connecting the centers of the two poles, creating a structure where the two poles support each other.
Arata created its own sleeve hub to combine the advantages of both sleeve-type and hook-type designs. As shown in the photo above, two sleeves are connected via the hub, enabling the two poles to support each other while maintaining the sleeve-type structure.
While this structure may seem difficult to set up for entry-level users, it actually allows for quick setup since there's no need to attach hooks one by one. Although it involves a bit of complexity, it offers the advantage of being able to erect the flysheet, inner tent, and groundsheet all at once from a pre-connected state when needed, providing a structural advantage during rainy weather setup.
2. Sleeve Hub Guy Point
The AX series features a guide line attachment point on the sleeve hub.
By crossing the poles and pegging them down as if binding them together, it is possible to rigidly connect the two poles as if they were joined by a hook-type swivel.
The sleeve hub guyline can be routed outside through the hole at the top of the flysheet. The AX-79 has a large projected area on its long sides, making it susceptible to wind effects from those directions.
The Sleeve Hub Guy Point (※3) is arata's unique mechanism that enhances the tent's wind resistance by pegging down the long side from the tent's top section, which experiences significant displacement.
(Using the optional emergency guideline kit is more convenient)
※3: Since no dedicated guide line is included with this unit, please purchase the optional Emergency Guide Line Kit or attach a guide rope cut to a suitable length yourself.
3. Inner Guideline
The inner guy ropes are installed on the inside of the short side of the AX series inner tent.
This serves the same function as the bracing commonly seen in prefabricated buildings for reinforcement, helping to suppress tent deformation caused by wind from the long sides.
Furthermore, the AX series allows for increased tent strength by installing an optional emergency guyline kit, though this comes at the cost of sacrificing interior space.
We recommend carrying it especially during long-distance traverses where weather forecasting is difficult, or when setting up camp at points where conditions are prone to change.
○ Rear compartment for expanding cargo space and improving wind resistance
The AX series features a rear compartment space in addition to the entrance vestibule. This space forms the cargo area while enhancing wind resistance from the rear.
X-shaped dome tents for 1-2 people are vulnerable to wind hitting the longer sides with larger projected areas.
Tents with a single-sided entrance typically feature a back panel shaped to fit snugly against the inner tent for weight reduction, but this structure makes it difficult to deflect wind, creating a direction that is vulnerable to wind.
The AX series prioritizes ruggedness and practicality over excessive lightness in its construction.
○ Distance between the ground and the flysheet
Raising the flysheet's bottom edge is a common weight-saving tactic, but the AX series prioritizes use in severe weather with heavy rain, wind, and snow, so it's set as low as possible.
The design reduces the risk of wind whipping up the flysheet during heavy rain and strong winds, preventing rain from being drawn into the tent. Furthermore, the AX series is designed for use with the rain fly in place during snowfall. By filling the gap between the ground and the flysheet with snow, the AX series can suppress snow from entering the flysheet area.
○ Tent color that minimizes transparency
At popular mountain campsites, it's often so crowded you could almost reach out and touch the tent next to yours.
Modern tents are made of thin fabric, and if they're light-colored, you can sometimes see the people inside faintly even during the day.
The AX series features both the inner tent and flysheet in a deep gray, preventing visibility into the interior during daytime while also improving the clarity of silhouettes when lights are on at night.
The disadvantage of using a dark gray color is increased temperature inside the tent during the day, but regardless of color, spending time inside the tent during the day is difficult in hot seasons.
Therefore, the AX series prioritized privacy protection in its color settings.
○ The inner tent is available in two types: "nylon" and "mesh."
※The inner tent for this product is made of nylon.
Starting with AX Version 3.0, we have enabled the option to select an inner tent.
In addition to the all-season "nylon," a new addition is "mesh."
Nylon models, while easy to use in rain or snow, were too hot for summer use at low altitudes and were unsuitable.
Therefore, we have added a mesh version for climbers who do not use it in low temperatures.
Additionally, the mesh inner tent is now available as a standalone option. This is also available for those who already own the AX Version.3.0.
※Please note that we do not sell the nylon inner tent separately.
※: The average dimensions stated in the text are based on arata's research.
