A size 60 designed for everyday use, prioritizing strength over lightness
With the AU-08 in 2024 and the ASU-08 in 2025, arata has sought to achieve a balance between “lightweight design” and “wind resistance” in its trekking umbrellas. The ASU-08L is a new product that incorporates the expertise in materials and frame design honed through these two models into a size suitable for everyday use.
While the ASU-08 was developed as a size 50 (86 cm in diameter, 61 cm in total length) for easy handling even on mountain ridges, the ASU-08L has been scaled up to a size 60 with a diameter of 105 cm and a total length of 72 cm. While retaining the lightweight design and frame rigidity honed through trekking, it has been crafted to a size that provides reliable protection from the sun and rain in everyday situations. Additionally, the even larger ASU-08XL, with a diameter of 113 cm, is now available, allowing you to choose the model that best suits your needs.
■Technical Note
○ Features the “Size 60,” which is ideal for everyday use
The 50 size (86 cm in diameter), which has been used in the AU-08 and ASU-08 models, was well-received for its compact design that made it easy to handle even on mountain ridges; however, we also received feedback requesting a slightly roomier size for everyday use. The ASU-08L is a model featuring a 60 size with a diameter of 105 cm. Although its total length when folded has increased from 61 cm to 72 cm, we’ve designed it to provide full coverage while still being easy to carry.
○ Frame design that prioritizes strength over lightness
As the size increases, so does the load on the frame when exposed to wind. With the ASU-08L, we prioritized strength over lightness and developed the frame by sparing no expense on material weight—even while using carbon, a lightweight material. We conducted repeated prototyping of the shaft—varying its diameter and carbon thickness—and the main and support ribs—using various cross-sectional diameters—until we achieved satisfactory strength. While there are products on the market with comparable weights, this umbrella stands out as a high-strength model in which the fabric accounts for the smallest proportion of the total weight, while the frame accounts for the largest.
○ “Silver”: The Ultimate in Lightness
During the development of the AU-08 and ASU-08, we pursued the optimal balance between weight and light-blocking efficiency for the Silver fabric through repeated improvements. As a result, we have succeeded in creating a fabric that is extremely lightweight while maintaining a high light-blocking efficiency of 99.99% or more. By incorporating this fabric into this product, we have also helped reduce the overall weight of the umbrella.
If you prioritize light weight, we recommend Silver; if you prioritize light-blocking performance and absolutely don't want to get sunburned, we recommend White.
○ Handle shape designed for a comfortable grip
Arata believes that the umbrella handle is a very important component. When the diameter of the umbrella changes, the surface area exposed to the wind changes; accordingly, the required frame strength changes, which in turn significantly alters the weight balance and the weight itself, leading to changes in the shape and size of the handle that feel comfortable to grip. Furthermore, when you consider the comfort of use for people with both small and large hands, it becomes clear that there is no single “one-size-fits-all” grip that is optimal for every umbrella.
The ASU-08L features a newly designed, proprietary grip—one that differs even from the ASU-08XL—for which a new mold was created. It also comes with a dedicated strap to prevent it from being blown away by sudden gusts of wind.
○ Storage bag included as standard
It is designed to be more convenient to carry and store, and is easy to handle even when wet.

* Please note that the light-blocking coating may have pinhole-sized peeling when you receive the product. Since this will not result in water leakage or sun damage, we do not consider this a defect; please be aware of this in advance.
* Please note that the light-blocking coating may peel off if subjected to strong force. The coating on the fabric’s folds will gradually peel off with repeated folding. Please be aware of this in advance.
* Because this product is made of lightweight fabric, it may tear if subjected to excessive force. In particular, when storing the umbrella, pulling on the strap while fastening the Velcro may cause the fabric to tear. Please fold the umbrella, wrap the fabric around it completely, and then wrap the strap around it and fasten the Velcro.
