○ Thoughts and Creativity
In an era when stretch fabrics didn’t exist and luxury was out of the question, work pants for mountain labor were crafted from precious bolts of cloth using a cutting method that minimized waste while still ensuring ease of movement. Assuming that pants packed with such ingenuity must be incredibly comfortable to move in, I adapted the pattern of authentic work pants to create a pair designed for shino-ging.While the fabric is nylon rather than cotton—as one might expect—I selected a twill weave with a subdued sheen to preserve as natural a look as possible. This is yet another item unique to Ryō, incorporating traditional Japanese design elements.

〇Mindfully
The moment you put them on, you’ll immediately feel how easy they are to move in and how cool they are. They allow air to flow through better than they look, and thanks to the fabric—which is neither too thick nor too thin—and the wide cut created by the gusset that extends all the way to the hem, you’ll truly experience both coolness and freedom of movement.True to their roots as pants originally used for mountain work, they move effortlessly with you, even on steep climbs where you might nearly hit your chin on your knees. The waistline has been streamlined by eliminating unnecessary nylon belts, so it won’t interfere with the hip belt of a large backpack. They’re ideal for work in the mountains from mid-April, when daytime temperatures start to rise, through early fall.

〇Styling
These pants have a silhouette with quite a strong presence, so they exude a certain rugged charm all on their own—but if that’s the case, why not take it a step further and pair them with a noragi to perfect the look? If you do that, you might not even look out of place if you happened to wander onto the set of a period drama. There are holes on the inside of the hem for threading a drawstring, so you can cinch the hem when you wear them.On the other hand, if you pair them with a kunai at your waist and let the fabric hang loosely around your knees, you’ll be ready to tackle any obstacle. The silhouette, fluttering gently in the breeze, embodies the solitary spirit of a shinra, creating a look that’s quintessentially Japanese.

This garment features Asahi Kasei’s ECOSENSOR fabric, made from recycled nylon. The ripstop fabric has a subdued, matte finish; though lightweight, it offers the soft feel and lightness characteristic of a double-weave fabric.It also offers an ideal balance of breathability—16.6 cm³/cm²/s—which allows sweat vapor generated during exercise to escape while providing moderate wind protection, as well as water repellency that keeps light rain at bay.
