Teppa firewood splitting hatchet Sumon

■Quote from manufacturer's description
A double-edged hatchet for splitting firewood, named after Niigata's famous peak, Mount Sumon.
The blade is thick and has its own weight, so you can easily split firewood straight by simply swinging it down.
The fire-forged steel construction makes it easy to maintain the blade by sharpening it or resharpening it, and with proper care it can be used for a long time.
The handle, made from hard oak grown in northern Kanto, is long and can be held with both hands.
All work is done by hand by craftsmen in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, so the items can be repaired and used for a long time.
Comes with a special leather case with a cut design inspired by mountain ridges.

Regarding steel attachment
The characteristics of a steel hatchet are that it is strong and keeps its sharpness for a long time.
The tip of the blade that cuts into the wood is made of hard steel, and the rest of the blade is made of soft iron.
The amount of steel is kept to a minimum and is sandwiched between soft iron which is easy to shape, making it relatively easy to sharpen, maintain and restore the sharpness.

For these reasons, people have long favored steel-tipped knives, which are easy to use, maintain their functionality, and can be kept on hand for a long time.
The steel hatchets made by TEPPA are forged using fire forging and are outdoor tools that will last a lifetime.

About sesame seeds and scratches
These are small dents or scratches that look like sesame seeds on the blade.
One type of dent is when chips of material get caught between the hammer and the material when the blade is being hammered forge, and the other type is when the material is stirred in a "shot kiln" to color the surface before the hardening process.
These dents and scratches are "proof that the product is forged" and do not affect its strength or use.
Please understand that each hatchet is a forged item, made by hand by a craftsman.
