In search of true 100% wool
When we visited Bishu, Aichi, where wool fabric is produced, to expand the possibilities of wool products at STATIC, as we believe that wool, a natural material, is an excellent choice for outdoor clothing.
This is where we came across wool products with an unprecedentedly gentle and fluffy touch.
Extremely comfortable to wear as soon as possible.
To be honest, there was so much difference from previous wool products that we doubted whether they were really wool.
This was actually made from wool fabric that had not been shrink-proofed.
Furthermore, the wool fibres are not dyed and I was impressed by how gentle it is to have the original wool fibres in contact with the skin.
However, the fact that the fabric is not shrink-proof means that it shrinks with each wash, making it difficult to wear casually as everyday wear, and furthermore, the fabric manufacturer that makes the shrink-proof and dye-free fabric has already gone out of business...
What is shrink-proofing?
Shrink-proofing is an indispensable part of woollen wear.
While the popular 'chlorine resin treatment' is superior in terms of cost, I felt uncomfortable when I learnt that the shrink-proofing process emits organochlorine compounds, which are considered harmful to the environment, and that the fibres are covered with a resin.
Chlorination removes scales on the surface of the wool fibres, which have water repellent and moisture control functions.
This means that shrink-proofing leads to a reduction in the functionality of the wool fibre.
Furthermore, wouldn't covering the fibres with nylon or other resins reduce the functionality of the wool?
The question of biodegradability also raises its head.
We also heard that the resin causes the fabric to become tougher with each use.
Is there any shrink-proofing that leaves the scales? Is there any shrink-proofing without resin?
Environmentally friendly shrink-proofing
The chlorine-free resin shrink-proofing process does not remove scales, but modifies hydrophobic scales to hydrophilic ones and prevents scales from entangling with each other = shrinkage by attaching hybrid collagen.
It also does not use resin.
In terms of biodegradability, it is more secure than chlorine resin processing, and the fabric in contact with the skin is only wool fibres, not resin.
In addition, by leaving the scales, which control the wool's regulating properties, we have been able to achieve wool products that make use of the original functions of the wool fibre as they are.
It can be said to be eco-friendly shrink-proof, utilising the wool fibres as much as possible.
I will never forget the words of the developer of the shrink-proof plant who told us, "It's safer for the health of our employees because we don't use chlorine."
