Kunai is a long gaiter made of soft shell material that is more comfortable and can be used over a wider area than rain gaiters.
When shinoging, which involves walking along ridges and valleys with few footprints, gaiters are essential to prevent foreign objects from getting into your shoes.
When I used to go mountain climbing and hiking, I used to use so-called rain spats (rain gaiters) made of waterproof fabric, but I had trouble with them because the breathability of the fabric couldn't keep up with the amount of sweat I produced, which caused me to become steamy and condense, and I was also annoyed by the metal hooks that would come off easily.
When proposing the mountain activity of "shinoging," we were planning a new type of gaiter that was different from rain spats, and we found the tabi socks, which fit the feet well even though they were made of a non-stretchy fabric, to be a great inspiration.
Based on the construction of jika-tabi, the kohaze was replaced with a lace-up style closure, allowing the fit around the calf to be easily adjusted, and the frustrating metal hooks were replaced with toggles, making it easier and more secure to fasten the socks to the shoes.
This is how we created soft-shell gaiters that do not hinder footwork and do not cause stress when hacking through bushwhacks or sneaking around for long periods of time.
