Recent improvements in the insulation value (R-value) relative to weight for air mattresses have been remarkable, making it nearly impossible for polyethylene mats to compete with air mattresses in this regard.
However, it is also true that air mattresses cannot easily escape the risk of punctures.
arata's new closed-cell mat, the ASP-14, is an ultra-lightweight closed-cell mat that not only prevents punctures and slippage like the ASP-03, but also provides a comfortable night's sleep on its own during warmer seasons.
Focusing on the balance of insulation, weight, and cost, the ASP-14 achieves an R-value of 1.4 and a weight of 110g at an accessible price point. This new-generation closed-cell mat fits every modern mountain adventure style.
■Technical Note
○ Materials with a good balance of cost, weight, and R-value enable manufacturing.
When creating the ASP-03, the concept was to develop a foldable closed-cell mat, which has since become the most common type.
However, the material for ASP-03 is extremely costly. Creating a foldable type finished individually for each piece would result in a high retail price. Therefore, considering the current demand for closed-cell mats, we had once abandoned plans for commercialization.
Over a year after the ASP-03 went on sale, through ongoing communication with the manufacturing plant, the ASP-14 was born. It utilizes polyethylene, a material that offers relatively low cost while delivering high performance in terms of weight and thermal insulation.
○ Surface pattern decided after testing
The surface texture pattern directly affects the R-value and comfort level.
We tested various patterns: ones with multiple overlapping peaks and valleys, ones with steep peaks and valleys that are easy to gain R-value, and ones with large peaks and valleys.
Initially, I considered creating a pattern resembling peaks and valleys that would also serve as a design accent, but prioritizing comfort led me to settle on the most universal design.
The corners, which are rarely used in practice, have been cut off in this design.
○ "Deliberately Not Applied" Aluminum Reflective Layer
The ASP-14 does not feature heat-reflective aluminum film (or powder).
This is intended for direct use during hot or warm seasons like summer. For other seasons, it is intended for use in combination with an air mattress.
The aluminum reflective layer directly reflects infrared rays emitted from the human body when lying directly on it, creating a feeling of warmth. However, when used with an air mattress or similar, its effectiveness is significantly reduced.
The ASP-14 is a product designed with weight as a priority. The aluminum reflective layer was not adopted because its weight performance is poor in the anticipated scenarios.
○ High overall performance, the one and only
The ASP-14 is extremely lightweight, with an average weight under 110g—nearly a quarter of the weight of a typical closed-cell hiking mat—yet it achieves an R-value of 1.4, covering the area commonly used for hiking.
While its comfort and resilience (permanent deformation) fall short of typical closed-cell hiking mats, its weight makes it easy to carry alongside an air mattress—a significant advantage that led to its commercialization.
Be sure to take it along with your air mattress for all seasons, and when pursuing extreme lightness in summer, bring it alone for your mountain hikes.
