About HELLE
"Helena Knives" was founded in 1932 in the town of Holmdal in western Norway. Inspired by the beautiful natural surroundings of mountains, fjords, and coastlines, these designer knives are carefully handcrafted one by one by skilled artisans who place great importance on craftsmanship. While mass production using machines is now common in the knife industry, "Helene Knife" follows a strict 45-step process for assembling each knife, with artisans meticulously completing each stage. The company is also particular about its materials. The blades are made from high-quality monolithic steel from Alima, as well as a unique three-layer laminated steel developed by Helene Knives in the late 1960s, known for its exceptional sharpness. Furthermore, each Helene Knife is given a distinctive name based on its development history and intended use. Learning the origin and meaning of these names will help you develop an even deeper attachment to your knife.
• Full-tang construction with the blade steel extending all the way to the end of the handle
The blade features a full tang construction (where the steel extends all the way to the end of the handle) and is made from ALLEIMA 14C28N steel—a highly polished stainless steel that is highly resistant to rust and wear. With a blade thickness of 3 mm, it offers sufficient strength and durability for heavy-duty tasks such as batoning (splitting firewood). *While the knife is sufficiently strong for batoning, please use it at your own risk, as improper use or certain conditions may result in damage to the knife. Damage caused by batoning is not covered under warranty.
〇Different types of steel have different applications
This product differs slightly from the DIDI GALGALU sold by the same brand, Hele Knife. Because it’s made from hard stainless steel, you can use it vigorously without worrying as much as you would with the traditional DIDI GALGALU. Hele Knife’s 14C28N steel isn’t just hard—it also offers a satisfying cutting edge that seems to glide through wood, such as when whittling feather sticks.
• A versatile all-in-one product
The blade features the sharp cutting performance of Scandigrind, which embodies Nordic craftsmanship and traditional techniques. In addition to splitting wood, you can use it to whittle feather sticks or take advantage of its length for cooking. Furthermore, the spine of the blade is beveled, allowing you to use it as a fire starter.
〇A handle design unlike any other in the world
The handles are crafted from beautiful curly birch, each with a unique grain pattern. Curly birch is known for its distinctive patterns, which result from the genetic diversity of the birch tree; these patterns give each knife a unique character, ensuring that no two are alike. The wood used for Helena Knives is stored in a low-temperature warehouse for at least one year to allow for slow, natural drying. Afterward, it undergoes various processes, and the handles are shaped and finished by hand. While every knife is crafted using different techniques and processes, they all begin the same way; some knives require as many as 50 steps from raw wood to the finished product.
• High-quality leather sheath
The leather used for the sheaths—a signature feature of Helle Knives—is high-quality leather sourced from Europe. To ensure compliance with our in-house standards, all cutting and sewing of the sheaths is performed at Helle’s factory in Holmedal, Norway. All leather products are designed and manufactured in-house by Helle using carefully selected, high-quality leather. The production of the sheaths follows the same philosophy as our knife-making: they are crafted through numerous processes with the aim of protecting the blade and facilitating its transport in a variety of situations.
〇The stability of a full tang
Although it’s a slightly larger knife, it sits firmly in the palm of your hand, so you don’t have to worry about dropping it—it’s a very well-balanced knife. You can use it for batoning and feathering without really feeling the weight of the knife.
○ The Origin of Didigalgar
The Didigalgar is a knife designed for the great adventurer and has been widely embraced by bushcraft and outdoor communities around the world. Developed in collaboration with South Africa’s Voetspore, this knife is the perfect companion for grand adventures that span continents. It is named after the desert in northern Kenya, often referred to as Africa’s last frontier. The included leather sheath features a pattern inspired by the African continent.
