In an era when stretch fabrics were unavailable and luxury was out of the question, work pants for mountain labor were crafted from precious bolts of cloth using precise, waste-free cutting techniques—yet they were designed to allow for ease of movement. Assuming that pants packed with such ingenuity must be incredibly comfortable to move in, I adapted the pattern of authentic work pants to create a pair specifically for shino-ging. While the fabric is nylon rather than cotton, I selected a twill weave with a subdued sheen to preserve as natural a look as possible. This is another item that truly embodies Ryō’s signature style of incorporating traditional Japanese design elements.

〇Mindfully
The moment you put them on, you’ll immediately notice how comfortable and breathable they are. They allow air to circulate better than their appearance suggests, and thanks to the fabric—which is neither too thick nor too thin—and the wide cut created by the gusseted crotch extending all the way to the hem, you’ll truly feel the coolness and freedom of movement. True to their roots as pants originally used for mountain work, they effortlessly keep up with even the steepest climbs where you might find yourself hitting your chin on your knees. The waistline has been streamlined by eliminating unnecessary nylon belts, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with the hip belt of a large backpack. They are ideal for work from mid-April, when daytime temperatures start to rise, through the early fall.

〇Styling
These pants have a silhouette with quite a presence, so they naturally exude a rugged, adventurous vibe—but why not take it a step further and pair them with a noragi to perfect the look? If you do, you might even blend right into the set of a period drama without looking out of place. There are holes on the inside of the hem for lacing, so you can cinch the cuffs for a snug fit. Alternatively, you can wear them with kunai at your feet and let the fabric hang loosely around your knees to navigate rough terrain. The silhouette, swaying gently in the breeze, embodies the solitary Shinora warrior and creates a quintessentially Japanese look.

〇Features of the Material
This garment features Asahi Kasei’s ECOSENSOR fabric, made from recycled nylon. The matte, subdued ripstop fabric is lightweight yet offers the soft feel and lightness characteristic of a double-weave. It also boasts an ideal breathability rating of 16.6 cm³/cm²/s, which allows sweat vapor generated during exercise to escape while providing moderate wind protection, as well as water-repellent properties that can withstand light rain.
