From the front, it looks like a standard shell jacket, but it’s actually an ultra-lightweight wind-resistant shell with an open back, much like a traditional Japanese chef’s coat. Since Ryo isn’t an UL brand, we don’t force unnecessary weight reduction; however, by eliminating waste and inconsistencies to focus on essential functions, we sometimes achieve unexpected weight savings. The Kunado Air is a prime example of this—it’s a piece that clearly embodies Ryo’s concept of “knowing when enough is enough.”

While the breathability of the Kunado Air—at 3.0 cm³/cm²/s—is by no means high, this is because the design prioritizes wind resistance. You might think that if wind resistance is the priority, the fabric should simply be non-breathable, but in fact, it is this slight breathability that prevents a stuffy feeling and reduces stickiness and moisture buildup against the skin. In other words, it offers protection against sudden gusts of wind and cold while maintaining excellent comfort.Since there is no unnecessary fabric trapped between your back and your backpack to block sweat from escaping, you’re simply freed from that stifling heat. At the same time, it reduces sweat buildup; the shorter sleeves keep the wrist area clean and tidy, while the slightly wider cuffs allow for better airflow.

■Styling
When you're out hiking, make sure to slip a Kunad Air into your pack somewhere.When it’s a bit chilly at the start of your hike or when you reach a windy ridge, pull it out quickly and put it on without stopping, even while still wearing your backpack. Even if you’re on an obscure ridge where you won’t run into anyone, it’s important to put it on with practiced ease, without letting your guard down. Then, once the situation has calmed down, take it off quickly as if nothing had happened and tuck it away again. This is the art of wearing the Kunado Air—the aesthetics of survival.
