■Quote from manufacturer's description
In pursuit of true 100% wool
We thought that wool, a natural material, was an excellent choice for outdoor wear, so we visited Oshu, Aichi, a wool fabric production area, to expand the possibilities of our wool products at STATIC.

There, I discovered wool products that were soft and fluffy to the touch like nothing I'd ever experienced before.
As soon as I put it on, it felt extremely comfortable.
To be honest, it was so different from previous wool products that I began to wonder if it was really wool.
This was actually made from wool fabric that had not been shrink-proofed.
Furthermore, it has not been dyed, and I was impressed by how gentle the natural wool fibers are against the skin.

However, since it is not shrink-proof, it will shrink with each wash, making it difficult to wear casually as everyday clothing, and furthermore, it seems that fabric stores that make unshrunk and undyed fabrics have already gone out of business...

What is shrink-proofing?
Shrink-proofing is an essential process for woolen clothing.
While the commonly used "chlorine resin processing" is cost-effective, I felt something was off when I learned that the shrink-proofing process releases organic chlorine compounds that are thought to have a negative impact on the environment, and that the fibers are covered in resin.

Chlorine resin processing removes scales from the surface of wool fibers, which have water-repellent and moisture-regulating properties.
In other words, shrink-proofing the wool fiber reduces its functionality.
Furthermore, wouldn't covering the fibers with resins such as nylon reduce the functionality of the wool?
Questions about biodegradability also arise.
I also heard that the resin causes the fabric to become harder with each use.

Is there a shrink-proofing method that leaves behind scales? Is there a shrink-proofing method that doesn't use resin?

Environmentally friendly shrink-proofing
Non-chlorine resin shrink-proofing processing does not remove the scales, but rather changes the hydrophobic scales to hydrophilic ones and attaches hybrid collagen to prevent the scales from tangling together (which would cause shrinkage).
It also does not use resin.

It is also more biodegradable than chlorine resin-treated fabric, and the fabric that comes into contact with the skin is made only of wool fibers, not resin.
Additionally, by retaining the scales that control wool's adjustability, we have been able to create wool products that utilize the inherent functions of wool fibers.
It can be said that this is an eco-friendly shrink-proofing method that makes use of wool fibers as much as possible.
I will never forget the words of a developer at a shrink-proofing factory who told me, "Since we don't use chlorine, it is safe for the health of our employees."
